The kind of words we use to describe our situations and our lives are the way that we perceive our lives to be. <strong>Our perception then is the reality.</strong> When you say things like something is a disaster or you are suffering from a disease, you are painting a clear picture for yourself and anyone listening that this is just the way it is. <strong>Can we, then, change our situations, or at the very least change our perception of a situation, by changing the way we speak about it?</strong> That is what positive affirmations are for. Research has shown that a positive outlook and attitude can improve a patient/s chances at overcoming serious medical conditions like cancer and chronic pain. It follows then that a positive mindset can help you overcome your negative beliefs about yourself and your life as well.</p>
<p>Saying that someone is a &#8220;pain in the neck&#8221; is a good example of using somehow meaningful language. Could saying that mean that literal pain in your neck could manifest? Is someone a &#8220;cancer&#8221; in your organization or family? By firing them or cutting off communication you could improve the quality of your home or work life, correct?</p>
<p>Choosing your words carefully is something that our mothers taught us as we grew. <strong>When you consider the powers of words in terms of doing what you say and saying what you do, you manifest the reality you live by your words and actions.</strong> Remember this as you make your way through each day and try to practice positive affirmations that will enrich your life and your soul.</p>
<p>Stop and think about the types of negative words you use to describe yourself on a daily basis. <strong>Do you say you &#8220;doubt you can&#8221;, &#8220;wish I could&#8221;, &#8220;don&#8217;t like that&#8221;, or are you just afraid? </strong>These are the words you can consciously work to replace in your vocabulary to improve your overall state of wellbeing and success. .<strong>Take the time to consciously reprogram your thoughts and words to eliminate the negative and replace it with the positive.</strong></p>
<p>Positive words and affirmations are the types of thoughts you want to have floating through your mind and coming out of your mouth. In this way you reprogram your thought patterns and with it your whole life. We fill our lives with the images that we focus on. Focus on love and love will come to you; focus on the bad and you will feel bad, look bad, and your relationships will be bad. This is a simple fact of reality. <strong>To master it all you have to do is literally change your mind.</strong></p>
<p>Start each day with positive affirmations such as &#8220;today I will be the best and most positive I can be&#8221;. Then as you go about your day, you can actually do it. Go out of your way to find the positive in every thought and situation even if you have to say that it was an &#8220;opportunity to learn&#8221; or a &#8220;challenge to be accomplished&#8221;. <strong>Live happily and speak about it in a positive way.</strong> What will at first seem like a tough prospect will soon be second nature to you. No more doom and gloom; only a positive outlook and a positive, happy, well balanced life will be ahead for you.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-464" title="j0411744_med" src="http://usetheadvantage.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/j0411744_med.jpg?w=100&#038;h=151" alt="j0411744_med" width="100" height="151" />Sometimes I find myself thinking, with youthful enthusiasm and impatience, &#8220;<strong>I want spiritual enlightenment, and I want it now!</strong>&#8221; I liken it to some great accomplishment or <em>place</em> within me that I will some day <em>be</em>. But enlightenment isn&#8217;t a video game; <strong>It doesn&#8217;t lie in some magical place at the end of my journey.</strong> I have the theory, or knowledge, that it <em>is </em>the journey. It&#8217;s in each and every moment. When I find, even briefly at times, that place of <em>stillness</em> that can only be found in the moment, <strong>in that moment, I am enlightenment</strong>.</p>
<p>Even with all my theories and knowledge, of which I am so very grateful, I sometimes forget that it is the experience that makes it real and true for me. <strong>The answer can only be found in the question, and once found, seems to lose its importance.</strong> But I&#8217;m okay with that &#8211; most of the time &#8211; as I&#8217;ve found, and have been saying for years now, the more I learn the less I know. <strong>The depth of one&#8217;s soul is not in having the answers, but in knowing to ask the question.</strong></p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-462" title="j0407152_med" src="http://usetheadvantage.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/j0407152_med.jpg?w=107&#038;h=162" alt="j0407152_med" width="107" height="162" />One great question I remember asking myself years ago was, completely without judgment, in a place of childlike innocence and curiosity, was <strong>&#8220;What would possess someone to become a hypnotherapist?&#8221;</strong> What was most interesting about the way in which I asked this question was, <strong>(1)</strong> It was more a <em>feeling</em> than spoken intellectually with words, and <strong>(2)</strong> That I cared more about <em>the path of one&#8217;s life</em> that brought them to that place than the decision itself.</p>
<p>For me, I just <em>decided</em> one day. It wasn&#8217;t some long, thought-out process, but was more about the path of <strong>natural healing within the body</strong> (through herbs and nutrition), and the <strong>connection with energies</strong> that I had been exploring for a number of years. <strong>It was a natural evolution</strong> for me, just as incorporating nutrition and energy work into my practice of hypnosis and meditation seems for me now, even though there was more &#8220;conscious thought&#8221; put into the latter process.</p>
<p>I guess, no&#8230; I feel that I have always known this was the work I would be doing. However, <strong>I had to allow the process to evolve in its own time.</strong> As Sue Monk Kidd states in her book, <a href="http://www.suemonkkidd.com/WhenTheHeartWaits/default.aspx" target="_blank">When the Heart Waits </a></p>
<blockquote><p>The fullness of one&#8217;s soul evolves slowly. We&#8217;re asked to go within to gestate the newness God is trying to form; we&#8217;re asked to collaborate with grace. That doesn&#8217;t mean that grace isn&#8217;t a gift. Nor does it mean that the deliberate process of waiting produces grace. But waiting does provide the time and space necessary for grace to happen. Spirit needs a container to pour itself into. Grace needs an arena in which to incarnate. Waiting can be such a place, if we allow it.</p></blockquote>

<h2 style="text-align:center;">Coffee&#8230;The Good News and the Bad News</h2>
<p style="text-align:left;">Coffee has always received mixed reviews from the health community when it comes to determining its effect on the human system. While we know it contains in that popular stimulant caffeine,<strong> it also has its fair share of naturally occurring nutrients such as potassium, calcium and super oxide dismutase</strong>, more commonly referred to as SOD. SOD has recently earned nutritional kudos as a very good systemic balancer and highly versatile antioxidant known to help <strong>eliminate free-radicals from the human body. </strong>Recent medical studies have shown that coffee may reduce your risk of colon cancer, and yet another study reinforces the belief that coffee may (slightly) increase your risk of urinary tract infections.</p>
<p>It is also noted that the more freshly made a batch of hot coffee is, the higher the nutrient content. The longer the coffee sits around, the more detrimental it becomes to the human system. So, where any kind of brewed coffee is concerned, drink it immediately after brewing, or not at all.</p>
<h3 style="text-align:center;">On the other hand&#8230;</h3>
<p style="text-align:left;"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-448" title="cup-of-coffee" src="http://usetheadvantage.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/cup-of-coffee1.jpg?w=150&#038;h=101" alt="cup-of-coffee" width="150" height="101" />For a long time <strong>coffee was thought of as a caffeine-driven stimulant</strong> and little more than that. Caffeine is a quick energy &#8220;pick-me-up&#8221; that has also received much criticism. In some circles, and according to certain studies, caffeine has been blamed for everything from genito-urinary complications to global warming.</p>
<p>Coffee&#8217;s often alluded to ill effects on the bladder, kidneys and reproductive system are probably less the fault of caffeine than that other negative coffee constituent&#8230;its reputedly high acid content, or what amounts to a low pH.</p>
<p><strong>Much has been made of pH balance in recent years and perhaps rightly so.</strong> Without getting too technical, the pH range for any organic element on earth is from zero (0) to fourteen (14), fourteen being extremely alkaline and zero being extremely acidic. The term, pH, refers to the potential for hydrogen. And since hydrogen is one of the principal elements of cellular life, a higher potential for hydrogen (alkaline) would seem to be better, at least to a degree. But &#8220;balance&#8221; is the operative word here, especially when we refer to the most delicate of all ecologies &#8211; the human body.<strong> The ideal pH balance for the human body is about 7.5 or slightly alkaline, and ranges of 6.8 to 7.8 pH are considered acceptable, depending upon the time of day. </strong>Not surprisingly, most fresh fruits and vegetables and certain herbs contribute to a highly alkaline pH. Meat, pasta, breads, grains, sugars, sweets (and most of the things we enjoy eating) tend to create a highly acid pH. Unfortunately, in the modern high-stress, fast food, high sugar, processed junk diets we have today, most of what we eat drives our systems into the acid pH range.</p>
<p><strong>Several studies now show that people with high acid pH levels are much more prone to get ill.</strong> So, what we are facing is a kind of constant juggling that requires an avoidance of certain highly acidic foods. <strong>The worst offenders are colas and sodas</strong> (at about a 2.8 pH). Anything made with refined sugars is ridiculous, simply because the body cannot even recognize the personality of the food and turns it into acid on contact.<strong> Coffee and tea log in at about a 5.0, as do some herbal drinks, wine and certain meats.</strong> So, the challenge with the human system is always a balancing act &#8211; one that requires it to eat foods that are slanted slightly toward an alkaline pH.</p>
<p><strong>So, the secret in the measure of coffee is the ability to use what is good in it and minimize that which is not.</strong> This requires some understanding of it, and what foods you might combine it with.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>A new year is upon us and many people have set good intentions on improving their health and well-being. <strong>However, all too often, after only a few short days or weeks of excitement, these good intentions are forgotten and better health just gets added to a long to-do list that never gets done.</strong> So what is the key to achieving better health and well-being in this new year? <strong>Simply put: Having goals. </strong>Although this may not sound like new advice, it may be prudent to actually follow this advice to be more successful in health matters. <span id="more-410"></span></p>
<p><strong>Written goals represent a true commitment to self.</strong> Without a commitment, goals are nothing more than a thought or dream. Thoughts and dreams are something people would like to have happen. However, if unwilling to pay the price to make these things happen, they never do. <strong>All meaningful goals have a price; and this cost may involve overcoming fears and/or investing a certain amount of time and energy.</strong></p>
<p>Goals should be more than just some arbitrary thing scribbled down on a piece of paper; they need to be SMART goals.</p>
<p><strong>Specific:</strong> Goals need to be specific. The more specific goals are the more focused one can be on achieving them. However, goals should be kept simple. Specific goals need to be selected for the right reason also. Choosing a goal that makes one happy (satisfies an individual`s needs), as opposed to making someone else happy is important. Specific goals should have a motivating reason behind them as well. In other words: Why is the goal important?</p>
<p><strong>Measurable:</strong> Goals should be measurable. If there is not a way of measuring the goal, it will be difficult to tell if it has been accomplished. Keeping written goals in sight as well as using charts, graphs, pictures, a journal, etc. to track progress is important.</p>
<p><strong>Action oriented:</strong> Goals, especially short-term goals, need to be based around actions (particularly actions that can be controlled), not outcomes. Long-term goals can be more outcomes based. Again, keeping goals in sight and the reasons why one wants to achieve them can provide the motivation to take action.</p>
<p><strong>Realistic:</strong> Goals should be reasonable or realistic if they are going to be attained. Unrealistic goals usually lead to undesirable results. Being honest with oneself regarding time, capabilities, resources, and desire is important to achieving goals.</p>
<p><strong>Time based:</strong> Goals take time to reach, so patience is important. However, if a goal has no endpoint to achieve it, it may never happen. For greater success, focusing on only one long-term goal at a time is recommended.</p>
<h2>Let`s take a look at an example of this whole goal-writing process:</h2>
<p><strong>Step 1:</strong> Establish a long-term (outcome-based) SMART goal.<br />
<strong>Example:</strong> I want to lose 20 pounds in the next 3 months.</p>
<p><strong>Step 2:</strong> Establish short-term (action oriented/behavioral-based) goals.<br />
<strong>Examples:</strong><br />
I will exercise for at least 30-45 minutes per day.<br />
I will eat at least 50% raw organic plant-based foods at all my meals.<br />
I will get plenty of sleep every night.<br />
I will manage my stress with only healthy stress management techniques.</p>
<p><strong>Step 3:</strong> Review the goal established to make sure it`s a SMART goal.</p>
<p><strong>Step 4: </strong>Take action. Three months are going to pass no matter what. Time happens, so trying to control time is not the best approach.</p>
<p>However, what an individual can control are the behaviors during that 3-month time period that will help him or her to achieve this long-term weight-loss goal.</p>
<p>SMART goals can act as building blocks, with each one being an important piece of creating a solid foundation for better health and well-being. <strong>Each achieved goal can provide the strength and direction necessary to help one attain the next goal</strong> (a higher state of health and well-being or whatever it is one is trying to achieve). This process can continue throughout life.</p>
<p>The following SMART Goals Contract can be used to help one better achieve their health goals for this year and in the future:</p>
