Is there scientific evidence that microwaves are dangerous?

October 22, 2008

About 2 years ago a friend of mine told me that using microwaves to heat food could actually be dangerous and unhealthy. I wasn’t sure if the “evidence” was there or not, but I figured, what would it hurt to spend just one month doing my own experiment. What I found was not only did it NOT hurt, but I felt better than I had felt in years! I had more energy, felt more at ease mentally and emotionally, and even saw improvements in my skin, hair and nails.

Of course, there was that part of me that wondered if it was all just in my head. Knowing what I know about the power of the human mind, this was a definite possibility. In the end, however, I decided that it didn’t matter if it was all in my head, I wasn’t going to use the microwave anyway because I figured, if there was even a chance that it was hurting my health, why take that chance? Besides, food tasted better when I heated it up on the stove or in the toaster oven anyway so it was kind of a win/win.

Shortly after making this decision, my suspicions were confirmed when I went out to a local restaurant. I ordered “steamed” vegetables along with my meal in an effort to make healthier choices even when eating out. Turns out, “steamed” means “microwaved” in many restaurants these days and it didn’t take long before I felt that all too familiar feeling… my nemesis, the MIGRAINE!

I’d been suffering from migraines since childhood. Headaches that were so painful, I couldn’t keep food down, had to have complete quiet, and absolutely no light. This debilitating feeling lasted for at least 24-48 hours each time. It dawned on me that I hadn’t had any migraines since not using the microwave until that day.

Of course, this could have been a coincidence, I thought… until the next time I went to a friends house for dinner. The meal was healthy, nothing greasy or processed… but some things were microwaved. That night began another 2 days of pain and suffering. In fact, each time since then that I have been exposed to anything heated in a microwave, this same thing happens. I no longer believe this to be a coincidence, and I’m no longer afraid to ask if “steamed” means “microwaved” in restaurants.

Below you will find an article with the science behind this dangerous item now being used in almost every home and office in America today.

Microwave cooking vibrates the molecules in your food to levels they were never meant to experience. This tends to damage the highly perishable nutrients so they are unable to nourish you the way they were designed to.

If you are familiar with homeopathy, you will realize that the microwave actually creates a homeopathic remedy of your food — except the remedy is designed to potentially promote disease — not promote your health.

A study published in the November 2003 issue of The Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture provides an excellent example of how this happens.

The study found that broccoli “zapped” in the microwave with a little water lost up to 97% of its beneficial antioxidant chemicals. By comparison, steamed broccoli lost 11% or fewer of its antioxidants.

An article in the April 1992 Pediatrics journal reported how researchers at Stanford University discovered significant changes in microwaved breast milk.

The changes in the breast milk included the destruction of 98% of its immunoglobulin-A antibodies and 96% of its liposome activity (which inhibits bacterial infections).

Other research warned that using a microwave to heat your baby formula could potentially turn it into a more toxic solution.

And there’s more…

A microwave study conducted in 1992 and published by Swiss food scientist Dr. Hans Hertel also yielded shocking results.

In fact, the results were so stunning and controversial that a Swiss trade organization, the Swiss Association of Dealers for Electro-Apparatuses for Household and Industry, put a gag order on the study. It took 6 years to finally remove the gag order. I wonder why?

Dr. Hertel’s conclusions were clear and alarming: microwave cooking significantly altered the food’s nutrients enough that changes occurred in the participant’s blood — changes that suggested deterioration.

Dr. Hertel reported participant blood changes that included:

  • Increased cholesterol levels
  • More leukocytes, or white blood cells, which can suggest poisoning
  • Decreased numbers of red blood cells
  • Production of radiolytic compounds (compounds unknown in nature)
  • Decreased hemoglobin levels, which could indicate anemic tendencies

Based on other microwave studies by Russian and German scientists and the Stanford and Swiss studies, the following is a summary of what I believe are your potential risks when using a microwave.

The scientific studies and clinical research reported that:

  1. Your body becomes significantly challenged to break down the unknown by-products created in microwaved food.
  2. Your hormone production (both male and female) could be altered by continually eating microwaved foods.
  3. The effects of microwaved food by-products can remain within your body over a long period of time.
  4. Vitamins, minerals, and nutrients of microwaved food can potentially be reduced or altered, so that you get little or no benefit.
  5. The minerals in vegetables can change into potentially hazardous free radicals when cooked in microwave ovens.
  6. Preliminary research suggests that microwaved foods can potentially lead to stomach and intestinal cancerous growths.
  7. Continual ingestion of microwaved food may cause deficiencies in your immune system through lymph gland and blood serum alterations.
  8. Eating microwaved food can lead to your loss of memory, concentration, emotional instability, and a decrease of intelligence.
  9. For infants, microwaving can potentially break down the essential disease-fighting ability of breast milk to protect your baby.

    Microwaved Water and Plants”

Below is a science fair project that my granddaughter did for 2006. In it she took filtered water and divided it into two parts. The first part she heated to boiling in a pan on the stove, and the second part she heated to boiling in a microwave. Then after cooling she used the water to water two identical plants to see if there would be any difference in the growth between the normal boiled water and the water boiled in a microwave. She was thinking that the structure or energy of the water may be compromised by microwave. As it turned out, even she was amazed at the difference.

Below are the pictures that were actually submitted with the project. Some of them were created with photoshop for the science fair presentation from the original photos, so the display would be consistant and easy to follow. The actual original photos are posted at the bottom with thumbnails. They are thumbnailed because the original photos were extremely high resolution.

interesting post. I get migraines too, and its interesting that microwaves can have such an extreme effect on food as you have described. Thanks for sharing.
