Fear is a fantastically powerful human emotion. As one of the basic survival instincts we were programmed with from birth, fear triggers the nervous system, priming us to react by taking physical action. In this reaction, commonly referred to as “fight or flight,” the body is flooded with hormones, including adrenaline, that aid in defending itself from harm.
In prehistoric times, this stress response was useful in protecting us from predators and other dangers. And even now, this impressive quick response system helps to keep us safe by allowing us to respond quickly to stimuli in modern society, such as avoiding a car accident or piece of debris in the road while driving. Fear gives us the quick motivation necessary to avoid dangerous situations of many kinds.
Although in an emergency, this response is undoubtedly both vital and valuable, it can be disruptive and even damaging in a number of other settings, affecting how many people respond to normal, everyday circumstances, ranging from a slight panic to complete terror.
Fortunately, hypnosis has been proven to be extremely effective for these conditions, as it provides the opposite of anxiety – deep relaxation – while teaching the mind a different way of responding to the feared object or situation. Learn More…
